The highly anticipated 30 Years of Bongo Flava celebration is heading to Mwanza this Saturday, bringing Tanzania’s legendary musicians and the rich history of Bongo Flava closer to fans across the region.

The show, which attracted a massive crowd during its Dar es Salaam edition, is now embarking on a regional tour, with Mwanza becoming the first stop as the celebrations continue across Tanzania.

For controversial Tanzanian musician Dudu Baya, however, the Mwanza show is more than just another concert. It marks an emotional homecoming for the veteran artist, who is returning to his hometown after about three years away.

Dudu Baya was last in Mwanza in 2023 before travelling to Dar es Salaam to seek further medical treatment. His journey later took him to India, where he underwent surgery.

The veteran musician expressed his excitement about returning home, particularly because of the opportunity to reunite with his mother and visit his late father’s grave.

«“I miss home, I miss my mum. I want to get home and hug my mum, I will also visit my father’s grave to pray for him,” Dudu Baya said.»

The statement has added an emotional touch to what is already expected to be a major night for Tanzanian music fans.

The 30 Years of Bongo Flava show is designed to celebrate three decades of Tanzanian music, bringing together some of the artists who have contributed to the growth and evolution of the Bongo Flava sound.

Following the successful Dar es Salaam edition, expectations are high for Mwanza as fans prepare to witness performances from some of Tanzania’s celebrated music legends.

The team is expected to land in Mwanza this morning ahead of Saturday’s show, with preparations already underway for what promises to be a memorable celebration of Tanzanian music.

For Dudu Baya, the occasion will also provide a rare opportunity to reconnect with his roots, family and the people of Mwanza after years away.

As the 30 Years of Bongo Flava celebration moves beyond Dar es Salaam, fans across Tanzania will be watching closely to see where the celebrations will head next.
