Traders in Homa Bay Town say the exit of foreign nationals operating small businesses is already affecting the local business environment.

‎The traders say they had a symbiotic relationship with the foreign nationals, with both sides depending on each other to keep businesses running.

‎But the departure of the foreign traders has now left a gap that traders fear could hurt the local economy.
‎
‎The situation has also been worsened by reports of break-ins targeting shops owned by some of the foreigners.
‎
‎Several traders reported to police after their shops were broken into over the weekend, with thieves making away with phone accessories, shoes, clothes and other merchandise.
‎
‎The incidents come as foreign nationals engaged in small-scale businesses prepare to leave the country following President William Ruto’s directive.
‎
‎The President says the move is aimed at protecting local traders from unfair competition.
‎
‎Homa Bay DCI Commanding Officer Jimmy Kisobo says police are aware of some of the cases.
‎
‎He says investigations are underway to establish those behind the break-ins and recover the stolen property.
