AFRICA CDC PLEDGES KSH 194.8 MILLION TO SUPPORT KENYA’S EBOLA RESPONSE

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has pledged approximately KSh 194.8 million (US$1.5 million) in financial, technical and operational support to strengthen Kenya’s efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak.

Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya announced the support after meeting Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale in Nairobi on Monday, where he received an update on the government’s response and measures to control the outbreak.

Kaseya commended Kenya’s leadership, rapid mobilisation and containment measures, noting that early detection, effective surveillance and timely interventions are critical in limiting transmission and protecting lives.

The support package includes the deployment of 10 African public health experts, laboratory reagents and diagnostic test kits. It will also support surveillance, contact tracing, case management and community engagement as part of efforts to contain the outbreak.

In addition, Africa CDC is providing equipment valued at approximately US$350,000 (KSh 45.4 million) to strengthen Kenya’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre and improve its capacity to coordinate public health emergencies.

Kaseya reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working closely with the Kenyan government, stressing the importance of coordinated action to protect the population and reduce the risk of cross-border transmission.

Both leaders called on the need for continental cooperation in responding to public health emergencies, noting that effective responses require timely mobilisation of resources, shared expertise and coordinated interventions among African countries.

As part of broader efforts to strengthen the response, Africa CDC has convened an Extraordinary Meeting of African Ministers of Health on October 28, 2026. The meeting is expected to assess the evolving Ebola situation, enhance continental coordination and agree on urgent measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.

Kenya has recorded 9 Ebola cases and tow deaths.
