Mombasa Archbishop Dominic Kimengich has urged security agencies to take firm action against political goonism witnessed during rallies across the country, warning that the growing culture of violence and intimidation could escalate and threaten peace ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Kimengich said security agencies should tame the use of goons in political gatherings before the situation gets out of hand, urging politicians to abandon violence and instead win public support by selling their manifestos and development agendas.

Speaking in Kituro, Baringo Central, during a thanksgiving service marking his 40 years of service to God, the Archbishop called on political leaders to embrace tolerance and allow Kenyans to freely associate with political parties and leaders of their choice.

He said political competition should be based on ideas, policies and manifestos rather than the mobilisation of youths to disrupt rallies, intimidate opponents or create violence.

Kimengich warned that the use of goons in politics not only undermines democracy but also threatens the country’s peace and unity, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

He challenged politicians to demonstrate leadership by discouraging their supporters from engaging in violence and respecting those with divergent political views.

His remarks come amid growing political mobilisation across the country as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi backed the call for political tolerance, urging leaders and their supporters to respect each other’s political choices.

Cheboi said politicians should compete peacefully and give Kenyans an opportunity to make informed decisions based on the leaders’ policies, records and manifestos.

Gender Cabinet Secretary Anne Cheptumo also called for political tolerance ahead of the 2027 polls, urging leaders to conduct their political activities responsibly and avoid statements or actions that could inflame tensions.
