Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced the rebranding of Azimio to the Ukombozi Alliance, effective Monday, September 21, 2026.
The move marks a new phase in the coalition’s efforts to organize ahead of the 2027 elections. According to Kalonzo, the decision was reached unanimously by parties within the coalition.
“After today, even this podium will change,” he said. “Because Azimio la Umoja, One Kenya Alliance, has this day, September 21, 2026, unanimously agreed to rebrand and change the name to Ukombozi Alliance.”
The announcement comes as opposition parties consult on how to consolidate their political strength ahead of the 2027 polls.
“Let the country know that we are on the move. The coalition chair, [Uhuru] Kenyatta, will convene a Jubilee party meeting,” Kalonzo said, “to make necessary decisions which will be communicated to the Ukombozi Alliance.”
The Wiper leader added that the coalition will take the necessary steps to formalize the change.
The rebranding follows a recent High Court ruling on the political roles of former presidents. As a result, Uhuru Kenyatta has agreed to step down as Jubilee party leader.
However, Kalonzo maintained that the court’s decision does not bar the former president from participating in politics.
Musyoka said the opposition would work to minimize divisions among its leaders and instead maintain a common political course ahead of the national polls.
“We will do everything possible to limit divisions among opposition leaders,” he said. “This includes addressing the Linda Mwananchi issue at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.”
Siaya Governor James Orengo said the opposition has concluded extensive consultations and is now focused on translating its plans into a coordinated political campaign.
“There have been wide consultations within the opposition. The target and destination are now set. All that remains is to hit the target,” Orengo said.
