Kenyan musician and content creator Kevin Kioko, popularly known as Bahati, has appealed to the government of Kenya to intervene in an ongoing dispute between artists and music distribution companies.
Bahati raised the concerns after his collaborative song with fellow Kenyan musician Mr Seed, “Mimi Na Wewe,” was removed from YouTube by his music distribution company, Ziiki.
In a video shared on his social media platforms, Bahati claimed that his contract with the distribution company had already come to an end, but alleged that he continues to face challenges that are affecting his ability to release new music as freely as he did before.
According to the “EMB Records C.E.O”, the situation has become frustrating, prompting him to call for government intervention to protect Kenyan musicians and other content creators who may find themselves in similar disputes with companies handling their digital content.
Bahati also referenced other African artists who have allegedly experienced comparable challenges with music distribution companies, including Tanzanian superstar Harmonize, as he highlighted what he believes is a wider issue within the entertainment industry.
The removal of “Mimi Na Wewe” from YouTube has sparked questions among fans about ownership, distribution rights and what happens to an artist’s music when a contract with a distributor comes to an end.
Music distribution companies play an important role in helping artists deliver their projects to platforms such as YouTube and other digital streaming services. However, disputes can arise over issues including licensing, revenue, ownership and termination of agreements.
Bahati’s latest remarks have therefore reignited conversations about the need for artists to carefully understand their contracts and seek proper guidance when entering agreements with music distributors.
