GOVERNMENT MOVES TO HELP FARMERS MITIGATE EL-NINO RISKS

As Kenya is expecting heavy rainfall to peak this early October, the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutant Kagwe alongside other stakeholders has rolled out various strategies to deal with El Nino in the country.

Early September, the CS launched a 2.1 billion livestock sector in Isiolo county to prepare for the heavy rains alongside other strategies.

“We have set aside 2.1 billion for the purpose of managing livestock alone, pastoral nomads to avoid low lying areas when looking after their livestock to avoid being swept by floods,” said Mutahi Kagwe.

Farmers across the country have also been urged to prepare ahead of the heavy rains whose expected risks to farmers include floods, diseases, high temperatures and humidity that might affect the entire process of farming.

In various parts of the country, farmers are already scrambling to purchase fertilizers and seeds to secure agricultural inputs ahead of the rains, as others rush to improve farm drainages and early harvesting to prevent crops from being damaged.

Various stakeholders, including weather experts, have urged farmers to take cautions of the early warnings like high humidity which might trigger fungal infections and also pests advising agro -dealers to position chemicals supplies before the damages gets intense.
