JUBILEE PARTY ACCUSES PRESIDENT RUTO OF HYPOCRISY AFTER HE URGED LEADERS TO BE DISCIPLINED DURING A SUNDAY SERVICE IN TAITA TAVETA

The Jubilee Party has accused President William Ruto of hypocrisy after he used a Sunday church service to urge political leaders to be more disciplined and responsible.

Ruto spoke at Mwatate Gospel Church in Taita Taveta County on Sunday, saying leaders must behave responsibly because their words and actions influence wider society. He said a leader should be a role model and “cannot be a leader and then show up at a public meeting drunk” while telling children not to drink.

Ruto did not name retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, but his remarks came days after Kenyatta revisited the 2022 General Election. Kenyatta made the comments on September 22 at a Jubilee Party meeting in Nairobi, where he said he still believes the late Raila Odinga won the presidency. The Supreme Court unanimously upheld Ruto’s victory after Raila challenged the result.

In a press statement issued in Nairobi today, Jubilee Secretary General Hon. Moitalel Ole Kenta called it “the height of political irony” for the Head of State to preach restraint from the pulpit while leading what the party describes as a government defined by institutional excess.

Jubilee alleged that the administration has subjected millions of Kenyans to economic hardship, punitive taxation and broken promises. It accused Ruto of turning a Sunday sermon into a platform for “petty political score settling and cheap moralizing,” and said the Kenya Kwanza government has no moral authority to lecture anyone on accountability, dignity or governance.

The party also said Kenyans remember what happened in the last General Election, and that “state-sponsored propaganda, political theater, or pulpit politics” will not rewrite that history.

Ruto has also urged critics to focus on their own work and stop supervising him. The exchange follows months of sharp back-and-forth between Jubilee and the government.
