Badminton Kenya (BK) has sent six athletes to Uganda for the 2026 Africa AirBadminton Championships, scheduled for September 16 to 19 at Aero Beach in Entebbe.

The continental championships will be followed by the Zone 5 Regional Championships from September 20 to 22.

Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, BK President Peter Muchiri emphasised the importance of Kenya finishing among the top two nations, noting that the continental event also serves as a qualifier for the 2029 World Games, scheduled for July 19 to 29 in Karlsruhe, Germany.

“We have managed to send six of our best athletes, three ladies and three men, to Entebbe,” Muchiri said.

“I know they will do well and qualify for the World Games in Germany because, with the support of the Ministry of Sports, we have prepared well,” he added.

Kenya’s team is coached by experienced UK trained badminton tactician Brijesh Jagdish Sonigra, who is assisted by team manager John Mburu.

The men’s team comprises Edwin Akwanyi, Sammy Sikoyo and Calvin Simiyu, while Jacinta Sengera headlines the women’s team alongside Yvonne Mwikali and Buyanzi Blessing.

The six athletes are among more than 120 competitors representing 14 African nations at the championships.

The participating countries include defending champions Egypt, hosts Uganda, Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
