A month-long programme to mark the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga begins today with candlelight ceremonies planned across the country.

The programme, dubbed “Mwezi wa Baba”, will bring together members of the public in various counties and the diaspora to remember Raila, who died on October 15, 2025, aged 80.

The main candlelight ceremony will be held at Uhuru Park in Nairobi from 3pm, while other ceremonies are scheduled for 6pm in counties including Kisumu, Mombasa, Busia, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nakuru.

The events will continue throughout October and culminate in a memorial service in Bondo town.

A national steering committee led by scholar Professor Adams Oloo is coordinating the Bondo memorial service.

Organisers have invited the media to cover the candlelight ceremonies and other activities planned as part of Mwezi wa Baba.

Raila died in Kerala, India, where he was receiving treatment. His family said he suffered a cardiac arrest after collapsing during a morning walk.
