The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) name, clearing a key legal hurdle for the political outfit associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
In a letter dated October 1, 2026, Registrar of Political Parties John Lorionokou informed the applicants’ lawyers that the application had been approved under Section 4B of the Political Parties Act. The reservation will remain valid for a period of up to 90 days from the date of the letter.
The decision follows a September 30, 2026 ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal in the case of Michael Caroli Omondi & Another v Registrar of Political Parties. The Tribunal set aside the Registrar’s earlier decision to reject the reservation of the name and directed the office to act on the application within seven days.
The dispute arose after the Registrar initially declined to reserve the name. The applicants challenged the decision before the Tribunal, arguing that the refusal had no legal basis. The Tribunal subsequently found in their favour and ordered the reservation of the name and abbreviation LMM.
The latest approval allows the promoters to proceed with the next stages of forming and seeking registration of the proposed political party. However, reservation of the name does not mean that Linda Mwananchi Movement is already a fully registered political party. The promoters must still meet the legal requirements for provisional and full registration.
Linda Mwananchi have welcomed the development calling it a win for the movement.
The development comes as the movement prepares its political structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Already the movement has settled on Sifuna as its leader and presidential candidate, although the party must still complete the required registration and compliance processes before it can participate in an election.
