IPOA OPENS PROBE INTO ARREST OF CITIZEN TV JOURNALIST ODE FRANCIS DURING FUEL PROTESTS

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the arrest and brief detention of journalist Ode Francis while covering protests against the recent increase in fuel prices.

In a statement released October 22, 2026, IPOA Chairperson Duncan Ojwang’ Oburu said they had contacted Francis on October 21 as part of its initial inquiries into the incident.

According to Oburu IPOA would visit Central Police Station, review police records and obtain accounts from officers who were deployed to manage crowds during the protests.

The investigations will establish the circumstances surrounding the arrest and determine whether the officers involved acted within the law and followed police procedures.

He said said the probe seeks to promote police accountability and protect the constitutional rights of journalists and other members of the public.

At the same time Oburu added IPOA would make recommendations to the relevant institutions once the investigations are complete, including action against any officers found responsible for wrongdoing.

He also said they would consider measures to improve cooperation between police and journalists, particularly during public order operations.

Ode was arrested on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 , during fuel price protests in Nairobi. He was later released from custody without any charges.
