KNH HIT BY PATIENT CONGESTION AS HEALTH WORKERS’ STRIKE IN COUNTIES DISRUPTS SERVICES IN COUNTIES

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is experiencing increased patient volumes and congestion following industrial action that has disrupted health services in various counties.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026, the KNH said it is receiving more patients who would ordinarily seek treatment at county and other health facilities.

This has led to longer waiting times and delays, particularly for non-emergency services. KNH’s Chief Executive Officer has advised clients seeking non-emergency care to consider other hospitals closer to them, where appropriate, in order to ease pressure on the facility and facilitate timely access to care.

He said the hospital remains open and continues to provide emergency and critical care services. “We regret the inconvenience and appreciate our clients’ patience and understanding,” the statement read in part.

This comes as medical services have been disrupted in various counties following a strike by nurses and other health workers.

Some of the counties affected by the strike include Kisumu, Busia and Kericho. The health workers are protesting lack of promotions, failure to implement collective bargaining agreements and delays in salary increments.
