New York — Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has called for concerted regional and international efforts to end the conflict in Sudan, warning that continued fighting is worsening humanitarian suffering and threatening regional stability.
Mudavadi made the remarks on Monday during a ministerial meeting on joint efforts to de-escalate the conflict and support inter-Sudan dialogue, held on the margins of the high-level segment of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
PCS underscored Kenya’s appreciation for the sustained efforts of the Quintet, the Quad and international partners, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, in maintaining international attention on the Sudan crisis.
He said the more than three years of war had inflicted a devastating toll on Sudanese civilians, displacing communities, separating families and placing a disproportionate burden on women and children.
“The Sudanese people deserve peace, dignity, and the opportunity to rebuild their country and determine their future,” Mudavadi said.
He expressed concern over the ongoing fighting in Kordofan, noting that the escalation risked deepening humanitarian suffering and contributing to wider regional instability.
Mudavadi outlined four key priorities that he said should guide efforts towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the conflict.
Immediate and sustainable ceasefire
Mudavadi called for an immediate, unconditional and sustainable cessation of hostilities, urging the warring parties to demonstrate genuine political commitment to ending the violence.
He further stressed the need to halt external interference and actions that fuel the conflict, deepen divisions or undermine peace initiatives.
According to the PCS, regional and international diplomatic efforts must be coordinated and sustained to ensure that mediation initiatives reinforce rather than undermine the pursuit of peace.
Inclusive, Sudanese-Led Political Process
Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s position that Sudan’s future must be determined through a genuinely inclusive, Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring that civilians have a meaningful voice in shaping the country’s future.
While acknowledging ongoing diplomatic and mediation initiatives, he called for their convergence around a common political strategy informed by the Berlin Principles.
He cautioned that the multiplicity of initiatives could create opportunities for forum-shopping and dilute collective efforts towards achieving peace.
PCS called for immediate, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to affected populations, alongside the protection of civilians and the mobilisation of emergency relief assistance.
He stressed that alleviating civilian suffering must remain a central priority in international efforts to address the conflict.
” I call for increased support to frontline and neighboring countries that continue to bear significant consequences of the war, including the growing influx of refugees,” said Mudavadi.
He underscored the importance of accountability and justice in securing lasting peace in Sudan.
He said those responsible for violations of international law must be held accountable, while mechanisms for truth-seeking, reconciliation and national healing should be pursued.
“Peace without justice is inherently fragile,” he said, emphasising the need to rebuild trust, restore social cohesion and establish the foundations for durable peace.
Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s readiness to work with the United Nations, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and other partners committed to a peaceful resolution of the Sudan conflict.
He expressed hope that the ministerial meeting would contribute to a more coherent and coordinated international approach capable of translating shared diplomatic objectives into tangible results on the ground.
The meeting comes as international and regional actors continue to pursue diplomatic avenues aimed at de-escalating the Sudan conflict, addressing the humanitarian crisis and supporting a political pathway towards lasting peace.
