SIFUNA TO RUTO: ‘HOUSING LEVY WILL GO WITH YOU’

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has vowed to abolish the housing levy if elected President in 2027, launching a fresh attack on President William Ruto’s administration over what he describes as the growing tax burden on Kenyan workers.

In a strongly worded statement, Sifuna declared that the housing levy would be scrapped under his leadership, saying, “The housing levy will go with Ruto.”

The senator also questioned the deductions workers make towards the Social Health Authority (SHA), arguing that Kenyans were already shouldering a significant financial burden through multiple statutory contributions.

“Is he done ranting about the 24K I pay for his housing scam because kuna hii 43k I pay every month for his SHA scam we also need to discuss,” Sifuna said.

He further criticised the amount deducted from workers’ salaries in Pay As You Earn (PAYE), accusing the government of imposing a heavy tax burden on employees while failing to demonstrate sufficient sensitivity to their financial challenges.

“Tukimaliza hio ndio tuongee juu ya the 500k in PAYE he takes every single month and splashes on tea and mandazi pale State House all the while insulting us the taxpayers that carry the burden of his greed,” he added.

Sifuna said his proposed economic agenda would focus on reducing government expenditure and easing the financial pressure on Kenyan workers.

“In 2027 we are cutting the fat out of our budget to bring relief to all Kenyan workers. The housing levy will go with Ruto,” he declared.

His remarks signal a potential policy position ahead of the 2027 General Election, with taxation, the cost of living and deductions from workers’ salaries likely to remain key issues in the political debate.
