KIRINYAGA RESIDENTS APPEAL TO DP KINDIKI TO ACT ON ILLICIT BREWS

Kirinyaga residents have urged Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to honor his pledge by taking necessary action against the manufacturing and selling of illicit alcohol in Kirinyaga.

Speaking in Nyeri on 25th September 2026, the Deputy President said he would take strict measures against those involved in the production and selling of illicit liquor.

Kindiki spoke in Kangai and Mwea where more than 20 people died after consuming illicit brews, Deacon Moses Chomba led the residents and church leaders to call the government’s support in the fight against illicit liquor.

According to the residents and church leaders, the situation had affected families and people in the area thereby emphasizing on immediate crackdown of the involved persons.

”Some young people have resorted to stealing from their families to raise money to buy alcohol.” Jane Magondu said.

” The brews have destroyed many youths and men despite the area having witnessed deaths linked to illicit brews,” Nancy Maringa said.

” We need to fight against the deadly alcohol, bearing in mind that Kangai was an example in the country,” Maringa said.

Stephen Muriuki noted that many youth waste a lot of time drinking following the increase of illicit brew spots in Kirinyaga

“They are very weak; they only ask for Ksh.20,” Muriuki said.

The people of Kirinyaga have appealed to the county government to stop the issuance of licences to bars operating in villages or rather rural areas.

“There are more bars than churches and schools. Why licence them?” Muriuki posed a question.

“We cannot say youths are not dying even today, only that they are developing problems then die with some complications. Things are worse,” he said.
