ODM Party Leader Senator Oburu Oginga has responded to former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s remarks that the late Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election, demanding answers on why the revelation has emerged four years after the disputed poll.
In a statement dated September 24, 2026, Oburu said Uhuru’s remarks confirmed what ODM had believed and maintained following the 2022 election.
“For ODM, this confirms what we believed and maintained at the time. However, after exhausting the constitutional avenues available to us, we chose to let the matter rest and move the country forward,” Oburu said.
The ODM leader questioned why Uhuru’s government facilitated the transfer of power to President William Ruto if the former President believed that Raila had won the election.
“We did so even as President Kenyatta and those around him looked the other way and handed the instruments of power over to William Ruto, whom the former President now says had lost the election,” he said.
Oburu also highlighted what he described as sacrifices made by ODM in its political relationship with Uhuru following the 2018 Handshake between the two leaders.
“Following the 2018 Handshake, we lowered our political ambitions in the interest of national unity and stability. We demanded neither Cabinet nor administrative positions in President Kenyatta’s government, despite our political strength,” he said.
He added that ODM made further concessions ahead of the 2022 election, including giving up its pursuit of key elective positions.
“Ahead of 2022, we again made difficult concessions. We ceded our quest for important elective positions, including the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, persuaded that these sacrifices were necessary to support our presidential candidature and the broader coalition project,” Oburu stated.
Oburu then posed three questions to Uhuru, demanding an explanation for the timing and implications of his remarks.
“First, why is this revelation important now, four years later, and not when the said electoral injustice occurred?”
“Second, if he was convinced that Raila Odinga had won, why did his government facilitate the transfer of the instruments of power to a person he believed had not won?”
“Third, what exactly does President Kenyatta expect the Kenyan people to do with this information today?”
According to Oburu, the 2022 election remains a sensitive issue within ODM and among Raila’s supporters.
“The 2022 election and the sacrifices of our departed Party Leader must not be reduced to material for contemporary vote-winning propaganda,” he said.
He challenged Uhuru to provide a full account of what happened during and after the 2022 election.
“Having reopened this matter, President Kenyatta should tell the country the whole story.”
